>USSR2 File: Kremlin: NATO must ratify adapted CFE Treaty within 5 months or Russia will withdraw; tests new air defense system

>The only reason that NATO has refused to ratify the adapted Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty, drawn up in Istanbul in 1999, is the continuing presence of Russian troops in Moldova (Transistria) and Georgia. However, as usual, the Kremlin plays the aggrieved party. Pictured here: The first Russian troops to leave Georgia, July 2005.

MOSCOW. July 16 (Interfax) – NATO member states have five months to consider ratifying the adapted Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty (CFE), head of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachyov said.

“After our NATO partners are formally notified of the Russian president’s decree suspending our participation in the CFE, they will have 150 days to decide whether or not to ratify the adapted treaty of 1999,” Kosachyov said in an interview with Interfax.

The withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia began in 2005 and continues today: “The 11th troop train will leave the 12th Russian military base in Batumi (Georgia) for Russia on July 12, 2007. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the train is to carry 44 vehicles of over 400 tonnes. The next train is expected to depart in the second half of July 2007. All in all, 8 trains and a motor column are to be dispatched from the military base to Russia or the 102nd military base in Gyumri, Armenia, before the year-end. The 12th Russian military base in Batumi is to be closed in 2008.”

Meanwhile, with typical communist hypocrisy, not content to denounce the USA for intending to install its National Missile Defense system in Central Europe, Russia is modernizing its own air defense system.

Russia successfully tests new S-400 air defense system

MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti) – Russia has successfully conducted the first live firing tests of its new S-400 Triumf air defense complex at a testing ground in southern Russia, the Air Force said Friday.

A basic firing exercise was conducted July 12-13 at the Kapustin Yar firing range in the Astrakhan Region by an air defense regiment that will soon assume combat duty outside the Russian capital.

“The exercise was a success,” the Air Force press service said in a statement. “The system destroyed all designated targets.”

The S-400 (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) is a new air defense missile system developed by the Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.

It has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), or twice the range of the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2.

Lieutenant General Alexander Gorkov, the Air Force air defense chief, said last week that Russia planned to deploy new air defense systems primarily around all strategically important administrative and political centers in two stages by 2015.

During the second stage, which starts in 2010, Russia will add modernized versions of the S-400 with enhanced characteristics in comparison to the current model, he said.

The system is reportedly highly capable of destroying stealth aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles with an effective range of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.

The Russian Air Defense Forces, which are part of the Air Force, currently deploy more than 30 regiments equipped with S-300 (NATO reporting name SA-10 Grumble) missile complexes, which will be gradually replaced with S-400 systems.

    >No major surpries about “former” Soviet Russia’s anti-NATO leanings and threatening to pull out of the CFE Treaty. Doubt you would hear the likes of Kremlin Dennis (i.e. Justin Raimondo) ever complain about that, but Kremlin Dennis would probably join the so many European-based Communist front groups aligned with so-called Muslim groups to protest testing of these missile shield technology use.Consider looking into the Arab European League. It organized much of the protests behind the Mohammad cartoons while it saw cartoons of Jews and Israelis in general being depicted as Nazis to be on the lines of “freedom of speech”. As I have also mention, the AEL is also being led by an “ex” PLO-trained Hezbollah terrorist and has affiliations with the Workers’ Party of Belgium which has links with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the Maoist group behind Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition group.
