>USSR2/Latin America Files: Zyuganov receives Venezuelan dictator, refers to "Comrade Chavez"; Latin America’s Red Axis leader addresses Duma

>Latin America is turning Red.
— Gennady Zyuganov, Chair, Communist Party of the Russian Federation; quoted in Eurasia Daily Monitor, January 27, 2006

First, we will take over Eastern Europe, then we will organize the hordes of Asia . . . then we will move on to Latin America; once we have Latin America, we won’t have to take the United States, the last bastion of capitalism, because it will fall into our outstretched hands like overripe fruit.
— Statement attributed to Vladimir Lenin, quoted by US President Ronald Reagan, September 9, 1985

While on the one hand paying his respects to the putatively non-communist representatives of the Russian state, namely, President Vladimir Putin (pictured below), Venezuela’s neo-communist dictator Hugo Chavez also conferred with one of the powers behind the throne in Russia, Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) Chairman Gennady Zyuganov. In the picture above Chavez’s Russian host presents what appears to be a painting idolizing the Bolivarian revolutionary, draped in the Venezuelan and Cuban flags, and trampling the US flag. In April Comrade Gennady visited his red friends in Latin America, including Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Fidel Castro, and the leadership of the pro-Chavez Communist Party of Venezuela.

In the article below, posted at the CPRF website, Russia’s communist leader: 1) describes the Venezuelan dictator as “Comrade Chavez, the reliable friend,” 2) states his intention to foster relations between the CPRF and the new United Socialist Party of Venezuela, 3) expresses solidarity with the national liberation (communist) movements of the world, 4) articulates his opposition to President Putin’s “cowardly and inconsistent collaboration” with US President George W. Bush, and 5) questions the ability of the Putin administration to secure a reliable, likeminded successor.

G.A.Zyuganov: Comrade Chavez – the reliable friend

Aleksandr Yushchenko
Press Service of the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation

The chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation G.A. Zyuganov answered questions of the representatives of the media related to his encounter with the President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez.

The Venezuelan leader, after arriving on the morning of June 28 in Moscow, opened the Simon Bolivar Latin American Cultural Center in the Russian capital. But on 29 June it came out in the heraldic hall of state thought. The chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation G.A. Zyuganov met with Hugo Chavez on June 28 and 29.

“Hugo Chavez has visited Moscow five times,” said G.A. Zyuganov, “so that the relations between Russia and Venezuela have become ever more stronger. And, as it seems to me, we already have foundations for speaking about the possibility of a strategic partnership between our countries. We Russian Communists wonderfully solved all difficulties during our meetings with the government of Venezuela. Especially under the conditions of the incessant opposition and pressure from the United States and its globalization policy. Comrade Chavez has noted already and actually he clearly smells a little by gray. [PT: This last sentence unclear in meaning.]

Moreover, collaboration between our countries could already today be much closer, if not for the fear of the Putin administration. It in no way can solve for itself the question about the succession of authority after March 2008, and therefore it fears to provoke the dissatisfaction of the United States in its contacts with Hugo Chavez. The maximally narrowed size of the meeting of Deputies of the State Duma with the President of Venezuela sequential time speaks, that the policy of Russia of the last years is inconsistent and cowardly.”

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation has in every possible way developed its contacts with the present government of Venezuela, fighting for a united front of resistance against the policy of American globalization. In spite of a long flight, Hugo Chavez’s appearance had much impact. This greatly was pleased to the Communist deputies, who were present at the meeting with the President of Venezuela in the heraldic hall of the Russian Parliament.

For us President Chavez’s appearance in the State Duma was extremely interesting and useful. Today Latin America constructs “socialism of the twenty-first century” and carries out an interesting and contemporary independent policy. This experience of very expensive stands. We will study it and be ready to discuss contemporary problems, and the tasks of the future with our Latin American associates. We met with Hugo Chavez and outlined the specific guidelines of interaction between our parties. Our meetings will anger some people, but we know that we can honorably collaborate and be friends with persons such as Hugo Chavez.

Comrade Chavez is a reliable friend and very bright politician, G.A. Zyuganov emphasized several times, as well as a man of great rhetorical power, man, who wants happiness for a simple people [meaning, probably the Venezuelans]. We understand that during the future visit of V.V. Putin to the USA, to the family estate of Bush, the President of Russia [and the US President] will join hands with the object of continuing the present political course. As a result, Venezuela and other countries where patriotic [communist] forces are in authority must engage in real and serious collaboration. However, Russian Communists will always be the loyal comrades-in-arms of national liberation movements throughout the world. To hasten and to develop such movements is one of the main program tasks of our party. I am grateful to Comrade Chavez for the proposal that I again officially visit Venezuela. We talked much about the need to establish interaction both in the international arena and within the framework of interparty collaboration.

    >Very unfitting to see Chavez speaking at the Soviet-Russian Duma legislature. I wonder how long before Chavistas can falsely claim how a “democratic” leader Chavez really is even when Chavez’s own true red colors are being exposed as plain as day.
